After the media uproarabout the recent physical death of an incredible being, Cecil the Lion- who wasillegally poached on July 1st by a now infamous American Dentist,the heat and attention on endangered species has only increased. Each soul has its own autonomous reason forexisting and though Cecil the Lion’s death was upsetting and disturbing forsome, the transition of this courageous soul has opened up the globaldiscussion of facing the endangered species crisis with an intensity and focusliken ever before. In perfect alignmentwith a new documentary airing on the Discovery Channel, Racing Extinction which is set toair in December, a series of riveting color photos of endangered species throughoutthe planet were projected onto the Empire State building to raise awarenessabout the potential fate of many unique and vital species on our planet if thetides to not turn in the direction of life and love. The Discovery Channelproject, Racing Extinction, created the amazing display with 40 projecting and160 compelling images that lit up the side of the Empire State Building atnight. Among the images was Cecil theLion (picture below) in commemoration of his famous passing to the other sideearlier this month.
Cecil was lured out ofthe sanctuary in which he lived by a guide and then shot with an arrow by anAmerican Dentist- a known trophy hunter. His death was not quick as he was tracked for around 40 hours afterbeing shot before finally being released from his body by a rifle. The public was widely outraged by the death,to the point that Cecil’s killer was forced to shut down the doors of hispractice. Despite the intense energiessurrounding Cecil’s death, is has served to open wide the discussion of animalethics on a grand platform.
