We have all been extremely excited about the IDEA that astronomers have found what appears to be a mega structure built by Alien civilizations near the star referred to as KIC 846285. Ever since the Kepler space telescope found out that the star flickers in a very unusual way, people around the world hope that the cause of the unusual flickering is an alien-made object, product of a highly advanced alien civilization located around 1400 light-years from Earth. How do researchers know it’s not a planet? Well according to scientists, the dips in light are something very different from what you would expect if a planet was blocking the star. Planets firmly believe that the dips in the light are not caused by a surrounding cloud of dust since astronomers say KIC 846285 to have a ‘planet forming disk’.
As scientists have failed to come up with a logical explanation for this extremely weird phenomenon, people around the world turned towards an ‘Alien’ explanation.
But why is everyone so happy about a ‘Giant Alien structure’?
Lets take a look at the Kardashev scale.
According to this scale which is a method for measuring a civilization’s technological advancement there are three categories: Type I, II and III.
Type I civilizations are able to harness resources from their home planet, the human civilization could be classified as a Type One civilization.
Type II civilizations can harness energy from their home planet but have the technological knowledge to make full use of their star as they are able to harness energy directly from it. According to Kardashev, this type of civilization could have the technological knowledge to successfully build a Dyson Sphere, a megastructure that completely encompasses a star capturing nearly all of its power output.
Type III civilizations have the ability to harness energy from their planet, their star but are technologically advanced up to the point that they can harness energy at a galactic scale.
If astronomers have really found an Alien megastructure orbiting KIC 846285, it would mean that we are in fact looking at a Type II civilization according to the Kardashev scale. This means that we are observing an extremely advanced civilization that could be both hostile and/or benign.
Remember what Stephen Hawking said not long ago
“If aliens visit us, the outcome could be much like when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans,” Professor Hawking told El País .
“Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonize whatever planets they can reach,” he said.
“To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational. The real challenge is to work out what aliens might actually be like.”
So what if we are looking at an advanced Alien race that is just as professor Hawking described, hostile, bloodthirsty looking to consume everything they come across?
