If you, like a growing number of the population, think investing in your health is a worthwhile effort, you might have an ‘eating disorder’, according to CNN, FastTrumpet, Popular Science, and other top outlets:
“Orthorexia nervosa is a labeled designated to those who are concerned about eating healthy. Characterized by disordered eating fueled by a desire for “clean” or “healthy” foods, those diagnosed with the condition are overly pre-occupied with the nutritional makeup of what they eat”.
We know, we think it’s pretty ridiculous too. When looking at statistics (which continue to increase, by the way), of modern-day diseases directly related to dietary and lifestyle habits, it seems more likely that not choosing to consume wholesome, unprocessed, and nutrient-rich foods in the presence of such clearly preventable illnesses could be a true mental illness: delusion.
What’s very clear is that concerns like Diabetes, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s, and many, many other diseases of affluence are almost non-existent in locations or culture around the world where people consume natural, wholly grown (and organic) food, make happiness (and social ties) a priority, and get in plenty of contact with Mother Earth and her healing energy.
In fact, returning to such a state has allowed many people to reverse their illnesses and discover a joy of living that was previously unknown to them while living the common – yet toxic – lifestyle.

What may be most frustrating for those who have experienced diet and lifestyle-related health improvement is that studies like this influence the population to fall back on old habits that have contributed to their state of deteriorated health in the first place.
Quite simply, it will never be healthier to order a Domino’s pizza and indulge in front of the television, rather than spend time with your family and create a whole-food, healthy, and oven-baked pizza at home.
However, it is pertinent to note that there is rigidity in health circles, especially in vegan, raw, paleo, and fad diet circles. As energy is always in constant flux, these diets serve a purpose in helping one detoxify and regenerate (usually because culprit foods are removed from the diet), however long-term (as a rigid diet) may not be sustainable due to a variety of factors. Because such extreme habits can cause fixation on being ‘perfect’ or not ‘falling off the wagon’, yes, orthorexia does exist. However it is an exception, not the rule in communities all over the world where getting healthy is a real concern and positive end goal.

Perhaps such statement was released to curb the mass rush for food change to keep the billion-dollar pharmaceutical company from declining in sales (food IS medicine, let’s not forget) – or not… but what it comes down to is that seeking a life that supports you in body, mind, and spirit is not an affliction or an imbalance, it is a natural state of being.
