If you’re one of the individuals who shamelessly scours YouTube for the best humorous cat video when in a slump (or just when seeking a laugh), keep it up!
A new study conducted by Jessica Gall Myrick, an assistant professor at Indiana University Bloomington, has officially confirmed that watching cat videos helps you feel more energetic and less stressed out.
Yes, that means watching Grumpy Cat might actually be beneficial for your health.
In the study, participants reported decreased negative feelings and increased positive ones while viewing videos that feature cats. Many reported watching cat videos while at work, which is apparently the best place to receive that extra boost of endorphins! Perhaps because in a heightened mood one would accomplish more, feel more productive, and engage with co-workers in a more pleasant manner.
“We all have watched a cat video online, but there is really little empirical work done on why so many of us do this, or what effects it might have on us,” Myrick said. “Even if they are watching cat videos on YouTube to procrastinate or while they should be working, the emotional payoff may actually help people take on tough tasks afterward.”
Believe it or not, over 2 million cat videos were uploaded to YouTube in 2014 alone, accumulating over 26 billion views. In fact, feline featured videos fill the most popular category on the video platform.
According to Myrick, online cat videos could eventually become a form of low-cost pet therapy.
For the sake of your health, then, you best feast your eyes on the video that follows:
