The Moon has been a topic of interest in the Astronomic and scientific community in the recent years. Many question have been raised as to why we have not been on the Moon Recently, why are we not taking advantage of Earth’s companion that could do so much good in the name of science and space exploration. Given the fact that according to numerous scientists, the moon is the number one place to be at the moment due to the rich minerals it hides under its surface. So why not make science fiction a reality? Now it is a possibility!
What would we need to go to the Moon and build a Lunar Outpost? The number one reason probably that’s keeping us back is “Transportation weight” and “Cost”. Endless resources would need to be spent to bring a “smaller” sized outpost to the moon, that will be fully operational and self sustainable. But what if there is an alternative that could facilitate us to accomplish this “idea”? The answer is 3D Printing.
It’s a technology that has drawn many eyes of interest from Medical, Military and Scientific aspects, resumed, 3D printing would make everything a lot easier, cheaper and faster. A perfect solution for the problems involved in construction a lunar outpost.
According to Laurent Pambaguian from ESA, “Terrestrial 3D printing technology has produced entire structures,” “Our industrial team investigated if it could similarly be employed to build a lunar habitat.”
According to news.discovery architects have focused on a weight-bearing “catenary” dome design using a cellular wall to help shield future moon astronauts from micrometeorites and provide some protection against space radiation — two of the prime dangers of living and working on the lunar surface. An inflatable pressurized environment within the dome’s shell will also be incorporated into the design.
Construction of a habitat on the Moon is the first step we as a human race need to take in order to “evolve” our everlasting desire for exploration. A moon base would be the first step to colonize the moon and take advantage of all the “rare” minerals and materials it offers. It is a perfect place for industrial building that would aid in the construction of bigger space ships — Star Trek style. The idea of a moon base currently is something out of a Hollywood movie, but thanks to 3D printing Hollywood might just turn into a reality.
“3D printing” offers all potential means of facilitating lunar settlement with reduced logistics from Earth,” said Scott Hovland of ESA’s human spaceflight team. The Moon is the perfect place to start building on our space exploration. It offers immense possibilities, and one of those is Space Tourism a topic that has also picked up in interest in the last couple of years.
3D Printing would turn science fiction into a reality and perhaps one day, not so far away we will be able to travel to the moon, for business or pleasure thanks to this amazing technology.
