According to scientists from MIT, they have managed to design a revolutionary Iron Man-inspired reactor which according to them, could generate limitless energy and solve numerous energy problems on planet Earth. Dont you just love it when Science fiction becomes reality?
Who doesn’t love Iron Man and Tony Stark? We have all enjoyed watching how Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, saves the world many times with his super-duper high-tech equipment that is powered by a reactor with “limitless” power. Well, thanks to Iron Man, a fusion reactor could become a reality in less than a decade as a group of scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have designed a small reactor that could create unlimited amounts of energy and all of that incorporated into a design that is commercially viable and nearly identical to that used by Tony Stark in the hit movie of the comic hero Iron Man.
This revolutionary system, the ARC reactor will be tokamak- or a donut-shaped – system that uses superconductors made of rare-earth barium copper oxide. Tony Stark, you better watch out, it seems you got some serious competition coming your way.
Science fiction is becoming reality
The fusion technique would provide an inexhaustible source of energy and could solve the global energy crisis, but better yet, this design would make all of this possible because, unlike other similar systems, this one uses new superconductors, commercially available, made of rare Earth-barium copper oxide (ReBCO). The strong magnetic fields generated by these coils perform incredibly by containing superheated plasma which allows the reactor to become much smaller, cheaper and faster to build.
While this new reactor is designed for basic research on fusion energy production, its potential can be multiplied accordingly by the increase of its magnetic field: doubling the magnetic field would increase the fusion energy output by 16 times.
Currently, as designed the reactor should be able to produce about three times more electricity than it needs to keep running, which is incredible.
Until now, no fusion reactor had produced the amount of energy it consumes.
For researchers at MIT “fusion energy will be the most important source of power on Earth in the XXII century, but we need it much sooner in order to avoid catastrophic global warming,” and this new design is a clear step towards that direction.
Currently, the world’s most powerful “planned” fusion reactor, is a gigantic device called ITER which is under construction in France. The device is expected to cost around $40 billion.
The Arc reactor “cooked up” by the bright minds at MIT is much more cheaper, effective and faster to build.
