Hacktivist group Anonymous declared war on ISIS and then quickly took down over 5,500 Twitter accounts that were attributed to the terrorists.
Anonymous spokesman Alex Poucher told RT that, “Our capability to take down ISIS is a direct result of our collective’s sophisticated hackers, data miners, and spies that we have all around the world. We have people very, very close to ISIS on the ground, which makes gathering intel about ISIS and related activities very easy for us.”
Poucher said that the group’s resources “might be better than any world government’s tools to combat ISIS online.”
“They picked a fight with Anonymous when they attacked Paris, and now they should expect us. We will not sit by and watch these terror attacks unfold around the world,” he added.
It seems that ISIS may have underestimated anonymous, finding themselves with their media accounts disabled after calling the group “idiots” in a recent statement.
Not only did they take down the Twitter accounts, but they also plan on leaking the names of the owners.
Anonymous has become a strong force of social change as they have grown in recent years and learned to focus their many skills and resources towards efforts of peace and empowerment. Affiliation with Anonymous is extremely risky as a result, as we have seen hacktivists like Jeremy Hammond and journalists like Barrett Brown receive steep prison sentences due to their involvement with the group.
It will be interesting to see what Anonymous has planned in their new “war” against ISIS.
