On May 15, 2015, a group of Russian scientists quietly began observing a signal from a star in distant space. Announcing “a strong signal in the direction of” a 6.3 billion-year-old star, located in the constellation Hercules, the scientists have sparked an interest from the Search for International Terrestrial Intelligence group (SETI). What does all this mean?
The star, unceremoniously named HD164595, is considered to be sun-like — and, likely, of a composition remarkably similar to our own sun, with at least one planet in its field being similar to Neptune. While further investigation is currently underway, this points to the possibility of habitable planets within the orbit of the star.
Furthermore, the signal’s strength ranks highly on the Kardashev Scale — indicating the possibility of a civilization which could harness the power radiated by its own sun, in an effort to communicate with other sentient life forms in the universe. Because of this, Russia’s researchers are calling for permanent monitoring of the star and its surroundings.
Both SETI researchers in Northern California as well as METI (Messaging Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) researchers in Boquete, Panama turned their satellite arrays and observatories towards the signal at this time last year, shortly before Elon Musk announced his plans to colonize Mars. Further data is yet to be conclusive on the matter.
Noted astronomer Carl Sagan once stated that Earth is currently going through a phase of technological adolescence, “typical of a civilization about to integrate the Type 1 Kardashev scale”, which would predict to put is in a position to be able to transmit and broadcast signals of a similar strength to the one received from HD164595. Scientists are hopeful that continuing to monitor this signal may put us in contact with extraterrestrial intelligence of a similar (or even higher!) civilization.
