Artist Nicolas Bruno has suffered from sleep paralysis for 7 years, a terrifying condition in which he is paralyzed while experiencing vivid nightmares in his dream state. During an episode, one may hear, feel, or see things that are not there. To cope, Nicolas began to recreate his nightmares into photo collages, casting himself as the victim as well as the figures that torment him. Below are a few of the creepy images he has been able to capture:
As you can imagine, seeing these haunting sights in any dream would be enough to freak you out, but in sleep paralysis, these dreams seem as real as life itself. Bruno’s mind is awake during these horrific hallucinations, so he is not only seeing them, but experiencing them as if he was actually there.
“This project has gifted me a sense of who I am,” he said. “It gave me the strength to persevere in life, to create art and speak to people. It gifted me art, and I don’t know where I would be without it.”
