Astronomers cannot rule out the possibility that the mysterious signals coming from a galaxy located three billion light years away may have been produced by an ‘advanced extraterrestrial civilization’.
The Alien hunting Breakthrough project has detected 15 Fast Radio bursts originating from a dwarf galaxy located 3 billion light years away from Earth. The discovery is notorious, not only because of the alien signals but because it is the first time FRBs have been spotted at higher frequencies than usual.
The 100 million dollar initiative backed by Mark Zuckerberg, Stephen Hawking, and billionaire Yuri Milner aims to search for alien life across the universe and it seems that it didn’t take long for them to discover interesting signals.
The signals originate from a source dubbed by experts as the “repeater”, the first ever Fast radio burst to repeat.
Experts at Breakthrough have confirmed the source is in a newly active state, and the discovery marks the very first time scientists have spotted FRBs at much higher frequencies.
And while aliens are definitely one option that cannot be ruled out at this point, the truth is that we cannot explain the origin of the mysterious pulses yet.
In a press release addressing the new FRB discovery, Breakthrough Listen wrote:
“Attempts to understand the mechanism that generates FRBs have made this galaxy a target of ongoing monitoring campaigns by instruments across the globe.”
“Possible explanations for FRBs range from outbursts from rotating neutron stars with extremely strong magnetic fields, to more speculative ideas that they are directed energy sources used by extraterrestrial civilizations to power spacecraft.”
However, if these signals really are coming from an advanced alien civilization, it would be nearly impossible for us to contact them due to the vast distance that separates us from ‘them’, and then there’s that little issue with us picking up the signals BILLIONS of years AFTER they came into existence. In other words, when the signals were ‘sent out,’ our solar system was just 2 billion years old.
“When the recently-detected pulses left their host galaxy our entire Solar System was just 2 billion years old,” Breakthrough Listen added.
“Life on Earth consisted of only single-celled organisms, and it would be another billion years before even the simplest multicellular life began to evolve.”
The 15 newly detected signals could also be the result of an unknown natural cosmic event.
What we do know is the fact that the signals left their home galaxy long before multi-cellular life even existed on Earth.
If this really is aliens sending out signals across the universe than I doubt Professor Stephen Hawking will be particularly happy. The world-renowned scientist said that if aliens found us they would likely be: “rapacious marauders roaming the cosmos in search of resources to plunder, and planets to conquer and colonize”.
Let’s hope it’s not aliens then.
