Due to poor dietary and lifestyle habits, many people — particularly in developed nations — won’t live to experience their 80’s and 90’s. That doesn’t have to be the case, however. In fact, new research suggests humans who take care of themselves have the capacity to live up to 115 years of age.
The study, conducted by Dutch statisticians, supports previous research that the maximum human lifespan is approximately 115 years. Professor John Einmahl of the Department of Econometrics at Tilburg University and his colleagues discerned this by collecting data from 75,000 Dutch people who died over the past 30 years. Based on this information, the human lifespan is 115.7 years for women and 114.1 years for men.
Einmahl told AFP: “On average, people live longer, but the very oldest among us have not gotten older over the last thirty years. Nevertheless, the maximum ceiling itself hasn’t changed.”
As IFLScience reports, the numbers are similar to previous research published in Nature. The study concluded that the maximum lifespan reached a plateau in the 90’s, but that it’s possible for humans to live up to 115 years. Senior author of the study, Jan Vijg, said last year: “Demographers, as well as biologists, have contended there is no reason to think that the ongoing increase in maximum lifespan will end soon. But our data strongly suggest that it has already been attained and that this happened in the 1990s.”

The researcher told the BBC on a later date that one would have to travel extensively to find an exception to the rule. Vijg said, “It’s almost impossible you’ll get beyond [115 years]. You need 10,000 worlds like ours to end up with one individual in a given year who will live until 125 – so a very small chance.”
At the time, the study was bombarded by criticism. Jim Vaupel, for instance, a specialist in aging at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Germany, said of the study: “I was outraged that a journal I highly respect would publish such a travesty.” He added,
“The evidence points towards no looming limit. At present, the balance of the evidence suggests that if there is a limit it is above 120, perhaps much above – and perhaps there is not a limit at all.”
Of course, now that new research affirms that the maximum human lifespan is 115 years of age, perhaps certain scientists’ opinions on the matter will change. One thing experts can agree on is that proper nutrition, regular exercise, mindfulness practices and time spent outdoors will increase one’s chance of living a long, healthy life.
