White flour harms your health and plays a major role in the tragic obesity epidemic sweeping through the world!
Bleached white flour was declared inappropriate for human consumption in 1910 by the Federal District Court of Missouri. Unfortunately, H.W. Wiley, first chief of the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), said that the implementation of this law was “halted through the political influence of the flour millers” and “no notice of violations has since been made by the FDA.”
In the book “The History of a Crime Against the Pure Food Law,” Mr. Wiley explains that today flour is made from wheat that is treated with fungicides, pesticides, and insecticides from seedling to storage. And around 60 different chemicals are approved to be used to make our current bleached flour.
Here are five facts about white flour that you didn’t know:
1. Provides NO nutrients
In order to produce the white flour we eat today, companies need to remove the wheat seed’s bran, which consists of six outer layers and the germ where 76% of the vitamins and minerals are. Because of this process, it’s lost 97% of the dietary fiber. The white flour also loses all vitamin E, 70% phosphorus, iron, magnesium, B-complex vitamins, and 50% of calcium.
2. Added Potassium Bromate
When all the layers and the nutrients have been stripped from the wheat, the flour goes through the process of bleaching, preserving and aging with the chemical called chlorine dioxide. The white flour passes through an extra whitening with chalk, ammonium carbonate, and alum. This additional process is responsible for making the white flour more appealing to buyers.
The flour then goes through an anti-salting agent called sorbitan mono-saturate, which is added in near the finishing stage. Finally, a dangerous chemical called potassium bromate is added to the white flour to top it off. Potassium bromate is a powerful oxidizer that damages cells. This chemical is rated a category 2B carcinogen (meaning possibly carcinogenic to humans) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). In 1994, it was halted in many European and developed countries. Chemicals such as chlorine, peroxides, and bromates are forbidden from being used in food in the EU, UK, and Canada.
3. Natural Insecticide
An interesting note: Any insect that tries to eat the white flour will die. Why? Because the end product is made to kill any insect that tries to live off of it.
4. Contains L-Cysteine
L-cysteine is a non-essential amino acid which is used in most conventional baked products to accelerate industrial processing. You can find it in the majority of pizza doughs, pasta, cookies, fast food buns, and pastries.
This non-essential amino acid can be synthetic, but the cheapest way to produce it includes using duck feathers or human hair. Another way to get L-cysteine instead of human hair is from cow horns, chicken feathers or petroleum byproducts. The majority of the L-cysteine is produced in China, and they have a history of poor regulation.
5. Contains Alloxan – Linked to Diabetes
A diabetes-causing chemical called alloxan is found in white flour, too. Alloxan is responsible for making your bread look fresh. Studies done on this chemical have shown that alloxan damages the beta cells of the pancreas. This chemical is so dangerous in your pancreas that the Textbook of Natural Medicine calls alloxan “a potent beta-cell toxin.”
The FDA, knowing full well that alloxan is not safe to consume, still approves companies to use this dangerous toxin in our food. On a brighter note, vitamin E is capable of reversing the effects of alloxan in the body. The Clinicians Handbook of Natural Healing by Dr. Gary Null says that studies done on lab rats show how effective vitamin E is in protecting the organism from the damaging effects of consuming alloxan.
The best way to protect your body is to eat organic, whole plant-based foods. White flour does nothing for your health. But if you have to eat flour, then choose whole flours or flours made from different products such as quinoa, chickpeas, almond. Of course, it depends on what you want to prepare. But the choices are there for you to live a good, healthy life.
