When the 22nd most eminent psychologist of the 20th century, Jerome Kagan, a prominent psychologist, and professor at Harvard University has something to say about ADHD, we should listen!
Over the years, Kagan conducted extensive studies on children’s cognitive and emotional development. He claims that doctors invented ADHD – that, in fact, it does not exist.
He believes that healthcare professionals and pharmaceutical companies contracted the disorder, and goes on to say that, “(ADHD) is an invention. Every child who’s not doing well in school is sent to see a pediatrician, and the pediatrician says: ‘It’s ADHD; here’s Ritalin.”
Kagan’s view gained criticism from psychologists and medical professionals. But due to his professional background and expert status in children’s cognitive development, he continues to defend his viewpoint. He insists that there needs to be a shift in the ways that organizations handle mental health issues, such as ADHD.
The problem is when children underperform or misbehave they often get diagnosed with ADHD without much investigation or assessment. Kagan disagrees with how doctors treat these patients. He considers the hasty decision to prescribe Ritalin shows impatience, especially when it comes to a mind altering drug like Ritalin. Kagan considers medication a last resort, not the first option.
Doctors should take the time to investigate the reasons behind a child’s misbehavior before giving prescriptions. He also advised that kids who misbehave need more educational support rather than drugs, which is not a sustainable long-term solution.
Kagan has also hinted that pharmaceutical companies create the idea of mental illnesses to make a profit. People have described his comments wild and reckless. But Kagan continues to defend his position on the matter.
He believes that more needs to be done to ensure that the health and safety needs of the patient are met. Prescribing drugs based on symptoms is not good enough. Instead, he recommends a reassessment of the entire system of how mental doctors diagnose health issues in the first place.
Kagen informed analysis brings him to believe that pharmaceutical companies and healthcare professional invented ADHD. He believes they make money from drugs such as Ritalin. Therefore it benefits those corrupt industries to prescribe medication to those who do badly in school immediately and without hesitation.
This activity only affirms the notion that the medical establishment cares little for the people beyond profit, and exist to create dependence rather than cure and prevention.
