Do you have what it takes to become a Breatharian? What some call an evolved form of human being that has purified his body to such an extent that they can live on pranic energy in sunlight and air, without food or even water?
A few years ag a Seattle woman born in England, Naveena Shina, stopped eating for five weeks to prove she could exist on water, sunlight, and tea.
She documented her efforts on Facebook and YouTube, but she quite her attempt to become a full blown “Breatharian” due to harassment and a “message from the Universe” 47-days in, that it was time to stop.
People said she was crazy, ill-informed, and misguided, just to mention a few of the choice words thrown in her direction, but was Shina on to something?
At 44 days in Naveena reported that she felt great and her weight loss had slowed, but she wasn’t sure if she was living on light or going through a “slow starvation.”
A Dr. Hoffman from the Hoffman Medical Center says that it is impossible for human beings to live on light because we don’t have chlorophyll or chloroplasts like plants, but Israeli author of A Year Without Food, Ray Maor claims that Breatharians can train their bodies to live on Pranic nourishment alone.
Maor says that Breatharians may long for the taste of food, but once their bodies are acclimated, they can live on air and sunlight.
Ancient texts speak of existing on pranic energy alone, but one must detoxify the body to its most perfect state, so that it doesn’t need to eat. The process can take many years. It starts with giving up meat, then processed foods, then there is a move to drink only fruit and vegetable juices, and finally any food that can add toxicity to the body. Removal of liquids is the very last stage once the body has reached a pristine level of cleanliness. In yogic terms, this is called Saucha.
Maor himself went through a brief period of Breatharianism, at first doing a 21-day stint, and then a year with no food. He now consumes an average of 400 to 500 calories a day in fruit and vegetables juices and an occasional dessert just to keep his taste buds happy.
A former Rugby player, Jericho Sunfire, went through a similar process of becoming a Breatharian – first eating only fruit, then only liquids, and then only water, finally to live on the pranic energy of the air and sun alone.
Jericho Sunfire, sometimes called a “future human,” explains that you not only have to overcome the fear of not eating ever again, but you must also evolve spiritually and mentally. He details his journey in the following video:
Perhaps the most famous account of a successful Breatharian is in the book, Autobiography of a Yogi. In Chapter 46, we are presented with a woman yogi who never eats. She was called the “fasting saint.” Her name was Giri Bala. She was said to have fasted for many years, living only on the energy of the elements around her.
“1. “Is it true that you have fasted for 52 years? We want to hear this from your own lips.”
After a minute of reflection she said: “Yes, since I was 12 years, 4 months old, and I am now 68.” (Her answers, of course, were given in Bengali and interpreted for me by Swamiji.)
- Q. “How is it explained?”
- “I had a contact with a Sadhu, who gave me a Kriya.”
- Q. “Do you not even drink water?”
- “I have no necessity of drinking water. If drinking water were a necessity, it could not be resisted.
- Q. “What is this Kriya method?”
- “I am forbidden by the Sadhus to teach this Kriya to others.”
- Q. “Have you made up your mind never to teach it to others?”
Her only answer was a blank silence.
- In answer to the many other questions asked by Swamiji she gave the following: “The Sadhu is my Sanyasini Guru. I also have a domestic Guru. My fasting is not due to medicines, but to the power of the mind. My practice consists of chanting a mantra and practicing a certain breath control (very difficult for ordinary persons). I had this power from my previous birth. I haven’t taught anybody—have no willingness to do so. I have no disease, nor experience of any.”
- Q. “Do you know how long you will live?”
Thrice the Maharaja of Burdwan took her to his palace for visits of two months, 20 days, and 15 days in order to test her. She has no hunger or thirst. Feels only slight pain when injured. Can control her heart and breathing. Has no excretions. The sunlight and air are somewhat necessary. Was married; no children. Meditates at night. Attends to domestic duties daily. Slightly feels the change in climate from season to season. Often sees her Guru in visions, as well as other great souls. Met her Guru at the age of 12 years, 4 months, when at a bathing ghat on the Ganges at Nawab, near Itshapure, as he materialized before her and gave her the teachings. On that day her domestic Guru initiated her. She sleeps very little, for sleeping and waking are the same to her.”
