Hollywood has a habit of portraying “true love” as star-crossed lovers riding into the sunset. While events like this might occur in real life (hello, dream wedding), more often than not, they are rare and infrequent. In reality, true love is much, much more.
True love is waking up to your partner in the morning and still thinking they are the most beautiful/handsome person on Earth, despite having frizzy hair, circles underneath their eyes, and morning breath. True love is doing the laundry — for the fourth time in a row, and making lunch for your significant other. And, it is the willingness to be vulnerable in the presence of another person who, deep down, you know is imperfect, as well.
One artist Hollywood could learn from on this topic is Pascal Campion. The French-American artist is based in Burbank, California, and spends most of his time creating heartwarming, soulful illustrations about everyday life with his family.
Pascal has been married to his wife, Katrina, for 10 years. Together, they have three kids: a 9-year-old daughter and 6-year-old twin boys. As the Huffington Post reports, his illustrations perfectly capture the importance of the small things in life and how they translate into actions of true love.
One of the drawings depicts an impromptu pillow fight. Another shows Katrina patiently waiting for Pascal to come home; she finds comfort with the family cat and her laptop. Perhaps the most relatable illustration is of the couple having fun — even when doing mundane chores.
In addition to having layers of depth, the illustrations perfectly convey what it is like to spend life with your best friend. As a result, the series is heartwarming. Everyone needs more reminders to appreciate the little things and to remember that true, lasting love is oftentimes found in the simplest of moments.
“The little moments are just as important as the big ones,” said Campion, who’d describes his style as “spontaneous and messy in execution but clear in communication.”
Following are 10+ of the French-American artist’s illustrations:
Comfort after a long day
Waking up next to him
Giving her a kiss when she’s perfectly relaxed
Impromptu pillow fights
Going on a hike with a picnic
Keeping each other dry
Sweeping her off her feet
Waiting for him to come home
Having fun — even when doing the most boring chores
Days doing nothing (together) are the best
Showing each other spontaneous affection
Watching the world below
Marveling at miracles you created together
Watching the autumn leaves together
Peeping through the door to see the most precious moments
Being there when he needs you
Receiving unexpected hugs
Those random, intimate moments together
Enjoying the day, despite the rain
Seeing the silver lining in any situation
Being proud of those little everyday accomplishments
Goofing around with the family
