Love is one of the headiest feelings in the world. However, unrequited love can have quite the opposite and damaging effect on us.
There’s often nothing more amazing than finding that one person who’s soul dances to the same rhythm as yours and we all crave that deep connection with someone special. Unfortunately, we often love someone unconditionally expecting nothing much in return. And more often than not, we end up heartbroken when we do. Nevertheless, we still hang on to even the final threads of hope that our love will be reciprocated some day.
Once a person has entered your life and has managed to shake your core and extract you out of your shell, it is difficult for you to let go, no matter how toxic this person has gradually become. Several people have fallen victim to unconditional, and often, unrequited one-sided, love. And they often get taken for granted and are taken advantage of when they do.
While many manage to break out of the shackles of an unfulfilling relationship, there are several others who cannot seem to just ‘let go’. Just like a harmful drug, we get addicted to the person for the highs they provide us with, without thinking about the negative influence they are in our lives.
Oftentimes, we don’t just want them to be a part of our lives, we also want to keep them close at all times. We crave their physical presence and them being around is almost reassuring to us. But we must realize that it is okay for you to love someone yet not have them physically present around you at all times.
It is often said in movies and pop culture that love is like a drug. It gives you the headiest feeling and the more you’re in it the more you crave for it. Sometimes, even when it starts to get toxic, it still is your daily dose of validation that you are loved, or at least once were, and you slowly cannot do without it.
When you’re in too deep, letting go is the most difficult thing to do. Especially when you’ve spent a large chunk of your life nurturing this relationship.
If it were a tangible object or an old piece of clothing, letting go is simple. You just discard it out of your life and never speak of it again. But something intangible like love takes a large amount of healing to get over. Letting go is a process that’s easier said than done when it comes to an emotional investment like love. And it is often the hardest thing you’ll do in your life.
More often than not, unconditional love is not a choice. It happens to the best of us in the most unexpected ways and sometimes, even if we hate ourselves for it we still can’t let go of that special person in our lives.
Most of us go through this in our lifetimes. But the process of letting go eventually takes place. Time is the best healer, and it will help you with this too. It’s a struggle till the end, but it is definitely worth it when you’re there.
