Five centuries before the European conquest of the Americas began, advanced ancient civilizations roamed the Americas. One such civilization inhabited the Brazilian Amazon, creating a bizarre arrangement of MASSIVE towering blocks. Today, evidence of an extremely sophisticated civilization can be found in the Amazon and its surrounding.
Today, experts finally have understood the exact purpose of the massive stones: Over 1,000 years ago, an ancient civilization created an ancient astronomical observatory composed of 27 blocks of granite, each up to 4 meters tall, standing upright in a circle measuring over 30 meters in diameter.
As the New York Times notes, radiocarbon tests and site measurements during the winter solstice shed light on the ancient civilizations of the Amazon. Archaeologists came to the conclusion that the indigenous peoples who inhabited this area developed a more sophisticated civilization than scientists believed until now.
In fact, it is one of the largest Stonehenge-like structures ever found in the Americas.
Experts began excavations at the Amazonian Stonehenge in 2005, discovering hand-made ceramic burial urns, which meant that part of the area could have served as a cemetery.
The stones appear to have been placed in the light of the Sun’s path in the winter solstice when the star is at its lowest point.
Therefore, the site may also have been used as a place of worship or as an astronomical observatory, according to the researchers.
“The stones of Rego Grande are quite extraordinary and in their irregularity may have their own unique meaning, different from other megalithic sites around the world,” Mr. Malville said, raising the possibility that Rego Grande reflects the importance in Amazonian cultures of animism, the attribution of a soul to entities in nature and even inanimate objects.
In the past, archaeologists and scholars firmly believed that the Amazon had been relatively untouched by humans except for small, nomadic tribes. The truth however, is much different.
Now, experts have asserted that ancient civilizations have existed in the Amazon and that it supported a population of as many as 10 million people before the epidemics and large-scale slaughter put into motion by European colonizers.
Recent discoveries point to the fact that thousands of years ago, advanced and complex societies existed in many parts of South America.
However, the Amazonian Stonehenge –as it has been called— isn’t the only sophisticated site in Brazil.
Located in the middle of the Inga River, not far away from the Brazilian city of Inga, stands one of the most interesting archaeological findings in Brazil. Also called the Itacoatiara do Ingá its translation is a stone in the Tupi language.
The Inga stone covers an area of two-hundred and fifty square meters. It is a vertical construction of 46 meters long and up to 3.8 meters high.
The Inga stone displays carvings that are even today waiting to be deciphered. Researchers have found several carvings, figures, fruits, animals and other unknown figures, but most importantly carved on the Inga stone are the Milky way and the constellation of Orion.
